About Tanya D Mizell
Tanya completed her practicum and internship at a residential facility for high-risk adolescent girls who had experienced human trafficking, substance abuse, various forms of abuse, abandonment, and displacement. That work laid a foundation for extensive experience with both physical and cognitive impairments across adolescence into adulthood, and with clients managing comorbid or dual diagnoses of neurodevelopmental and mental health conditions.
Her clinical focus spans forensic counseling, career counseling, and addiction counseling, and she has worked extensively with issues such as trauma, grief, anxiety, mood disorders, relationship and family concerns, neurodiversity, parenting, and life transitions. Tanya draws on person-centered and choice/reality therapy principles and routinely uses motivational interviewing alongside evidence-based approaches to support client growth.
She earned a Bachelor of Science with a dual focus in Criminal Justice and Psychology and a Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling with specializations in Forensic Counseling and Career Counseling from Walden University. Tanya is pursuing a Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision with a specialization in Addictions Counseling, expected in 2027. She practices in Michigan and does not currently work with international clients.

Therapeutic Approaches and Online Care
Client-Centered Therapy focuses on the individual's strengths and goals, creating a supportive environment where the therapist follows the client's lead and helps them explore priorities and values. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) helps clients identify and shift unhelpful thinking and behavior patterns, which can be useful for anxiety, depression, and stress. Motivational Interviewing is a collaborative, nonjudgmental method that helps people clarify their own reasons for change and build motivation for steps forward, commonly used with behavior change and addiction-related goals.
Choosing the right approach is part of the therapeutic process. Tanya works collaboratively with each person to determine which methods fit their needs, goals, and preferences, and will adapt strategies over time so treatment remains practical and relevant.
Online therapy offers flexible options for connecting with a licensed professional through video calls, phone sessions, live chat, or text-based messaging. These formats can make scheduling easier, reduce travel time, and support continuity of care for people with caregiving responsibilities, mobility limitations, or busy schedules, while allowing therapists to use the same evidence-based approaches they would in person.
